D9 hires interim for business services

District 9 has hired an interim manager of business services following the resignation of Greg Lecuyer, who has accepted a position with the Corvallis School District.

Dr. Daniel Zaklan is currently the director of human services for the
Medford School District. He began working with the Medford School
District as director of personnel in 1988, became director of secondary
education and personnel in 1994 and accepted his current position in
2005.

His educational background reaches back to 1970 where
he was a teacher and acting assistant principal in Springfield at
Thurston Junior High.

He has received a number of awards
including being the winner of the Oregon State Bev Gladder Award for
mentorship. Zaklan has taught college level classes, initiated various
programs and made numerous presentations to staff and the public
regarding public education.

Zaklan earned his PhD in school
administration, curriculum and instruction in 1980 from the University
of Oregon, has a master of science in secondary education from Southern
Oregon College and a bachelor of science in secondary education and
social studies from Southern Oregon College. He took 30+ hours of an AA
degree in accounting from Edmonds Community College in 1985.

Zaklan
said he had been planning to retire until Superintendent Cynda Rickert
contacted him. He was her mentor when she and two or three of the new
District 9 employees worked for the Medford School District.

Zaklan
describes himself as a fiscal conservative. He said financial planning
is where making kids succeed or not succeed begins. "We need to
identify where the money is, where it needs to go and make
recommendations for long-term planning in all areas," said Zaklan.

He expects to begin part-time effective July 1.
