Joe was born April 3, 1920, in Hemiway, South Carolina just west of Mytle Beach. He graduated from high school at the age of 16. He became an electrician and during World War II one of his first jobs was working for a defense contractor on Oahu where he met Janet Vasconellos, his soul mate for over the next 60 years. They were married in September 1942.
Soon after that Joe was in the U.S. Army in Europe. After the war they
settled in N. Carolina for a while and eventually moved to Santa Maria,
CA. In California Joe was an electrical contractor while Janet worked
as a waitress. Joe also worked in Vanderberg Airbase for a while, but
it was a little too secretive for him. He never knew what he was wiring
In the late 1950s they made a trip to Southern Oregon,
buying 160 acres on Elk Creek Road and every summer they would try to
vacation there. Then in 1964 they bought the Rogue Elk Hotel and later
they opened the first Rogue Elk Café and raised six children. They
retired in 1989 to The Big Island.
In April of 2008, Joe
Haselden passsed away. Janet preceded him in death in 2006. On June 7,
2008 we will have a Remembrance Picnic at the Rogue Elk Park. All
family, friends and past customers are welcome. Call Robert at (541)
