Many D9 scores are up, but still below state level

District 9 received the final AYP information on Sept 4. According to Tina Mondale, director of school improvement, Mountain View Elementary will be in its first year of school improvement.

Mondale said last year special education students did not make their progress target in math and this year English Language Learners (ELL) did not make their target. This means the school did not make progress in every area for two years. However, there was improvement for both and, in fact, special education students did meet their target this year.

Parents who have children in MVE  may elect to select another school within the District 9 because it is considered a school needing improvement.

Mondale said the school will have to submit a revised school improvement plan. She said math scores in the district are a concern. This year the district will be looking at materials, new book adoption, and investigating programs at other schools.

Overall, reading and math scores at the elementary level are going up, while secondary are going down. Writing is another area of concern after students leave the elementary grades.

The state released 2007-08 assessment test scores in reading, math, writing and science last week. Statewide students in grades 3 through 5 improved in reading and math. Writing declined statewide for elementary students.

Tests were given to grades 3 through 10 in mathematics. In every grade the scores that met or exceeded the state goals were well below the state averages.  Overall in District 9, 57.4 percent met or exceeded while statewide that number showed 70.8 percent of the students met or exceeded.

Reading and literature were all below state average. Overall 67.1 percent of the District 9 students met or exceeded while statewide that percent was 74.2 percent.

Writing tests were given to 4th, 7th and 10th grade students. The overall score for District 9 was 34.4 percent while the state average was 49.3 percent.
