SC flag football needs funds for trip

Ten young football players from the Shady Cove Buccaneers team are seeking financial help from the community to compete in a game at the Oakland Raiders Stadium in Oakland, California. The competition is the NFL Flag Football Regional Tournament that includes youth teams from Southern Oregon and Northern California.
This is the first year the 4th and 5th boys competed in the NFL program through the Medford Parks and Recreation Department. They were the smallest and least experienced team, according to Tina Layman whose son Caleb plays for the Buccaneers. They persevered even though they did not have a real playing field. They practiced in dirt lots, backyards or where ever they could. Their dedication paid off when they won seven games and tied one, out of eight games.
Dirt lots or not, the team qualified for regionals. This will be the first team to be sent to the tournament by the parks department.
Funding is needed for transportation, lodging and food for the ten players and their families for the two-night stay. The team is seeking cash donations and an account has been opened at PremierWest Bank. The account is the "Shady Cove Flag Football Fund." The group estimates the trip will cost. $5,000. For more information call Tina Layman at 621-8115 or Coach Mike Layman at 821-3587.
