The conference season began Sept. 27 with a tough 5-0 home loss to the league front-runner Ashland. They bounced back at Mazama on Tuesday (9/30) to pull to 1-1 in conference play. After a slow start, Eagle Point scored their first goal with seven minutes left in the first half on a well placed corner kick by Dario Madera. The corner flew just over the Mazama goalie, and Tyler Van Dyke headed the ball into the net.
"We dominated the second half, scoring two goals in the first fifteen minutes," said Coach Derek Dougherty. In the seventh minute, after a scramble at the top of the penalty area, senior forward Juan Pulido corralled the ball and rifled a shot past the goalie. The second goal came just six minutes later on a strike by Alex Rodriguez. A header from Pulido on a free kick from Madera landed at the feet of Rodriguez, who calmly tucked the ball into the net from twelve yards out.
"Our defense earned its second shutout of the season on another strong game from senior goalie Hernan Torres and sweeper John Navarro," said the coach. KU was in town last Saturday (Oct. 4) to meet the Eagles.
"The team has been playing with a great deal of heart throughout the season. After a difficult loss to a very talented Ashland squad, we were able to overcome a little early sluggishness to get a much needed win at Mazama.," said Dougherty. He said he expected the KU game would be a very hard fought match that will be crucial as they work to reach the playoffs.
Our record is 5-1-2, with the most important games still ahead of them.
