Eagle Point was honored last week as a Tree City USA for the 17th consecutive year. And, in addition, the city received a Growth Award for planting so many trees above and beyond Tree City USA requirements.

Greg Alexander, ODF District Forester, made the presentations.

Each year the city selects a tree and a location to plant a special tree as part of the Arbor Day, Tree City celebration. This year’s tree is a grafted tree and is a hybrid of an Oriental Plane and American Sycamore. It is a member of the maple family. It will have yellow fall leaves and provide red flowers earlier in the year. At maturity it will grow to 70-100 ft. with a span of 60-80 ft. But, at rate of two feet per year, it will take a while to reach its full potential. The tree was planted near the horseshoe pits in order to eventually provide some welcome shade for horseshoe participants.
