Shady Cove Police Chief Rick Mendenhall after a lengthy career in the public safety field.
Mendenhall has been the police chief since 2004. In earlier years, he volunteered as a Reserve Officer with the department. He spent more than 20 years working as a firefighter/paramedic, retiring in 2007 from Jackson County Fire District #4 in Shady Cove. In recent years, the chief has been called upon to assist other agencies in high-profile rescue and recovery missions, some garnering national media attention. Chief Mendenhall was also nominated earlier this year for an America’s Most Wanted All-Star Award.
Chief Mendenhall says he has enjoyed the opportunity to lead the police department and to help the community. He says he is proud of the accomplishments made by the department’s employees and of the increase in citizen involvement, especially with the Neighborhood Watch program. Chief Mendenhall looks forward to the opportunity to spend more time with his family and to resume some of his favorite hobbies.
The chief will be working with staff and volunteers to ensure a smooth transition. He will step down this summer; however, an official retirement date has not been set and a successor has not yet been chosen. Sgt. Julie Denney will serve as acting chief in the interim chief until a new chief is selected.
