Don Hoopingarner, 73, died Sept. 4, 2009 at his home on the Rogue River in Shady Cove.
He was born on June 18, 1936, in Ventura, Calif., to Paul and Merle Hoopingarner. He grew up surfing, lifeguarding and fishing, and loving every minute of it. He excelled on the basketball court from junior high school through college. His basketball skills earned him a scholarship to UCSB.
He became a firefighter in 1957, a job he loved. He retired as a captain from the Ventura City Fire Department after 27 years of service. He was a wonderful husband and father and had many loving friends. After retiring, he moved to Shady Cove with his wife, Sue and dog, Sunny.
He is survived by his wife, Sue; sons, John and Chris, sister, Carolyn Pearson, and two granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Paula.
