An invitation to an Open House on Sunday, September 13 will give Upper Rogue residents a chance to meet Pastor Larry Chasteen and his wife, Sidney. Chasteen is Pastor of the River Bend Community Church and is in the process of relocating to Shady Cove from Grants Pass. A gregarious man, Chasteen was ordained in August 2005 in the Southern Baptist Church.
Although Chasteen has been a Pastor for a relatively short time, he practiced his faith throughout his life. This includes the time spent during a 21-year stint in the Air Force as a Recreation Director overseeing gymnasiums, youth centers, golf courses and more. He has been a Deacon since 1974 in various churches around the world such as in Okinawa, Germany and in two Missouri churches, he said.
In the early nineties, Chasteen, who has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Recreation, was asked to be Minister of Recreation and a Youth Director at the Petosi Southern Baptist Church in Missouri. Then the Chasteen’s son passed away in 2001 and during that difficult time, the Chasteen’s spiritual leader said to him, “Don’t you think it is time you became a Pastor?” Chasteen realized he had a calling and started interim Pastor work.
The Chasteen’s relocated to Grants Pass in 2004 to take care of elderly parents and in 2008, he took over the River Bend Church, commuting almost daily. Mrs. Chasteen is also active, running the children’s church.
Chasteen is a simple preacher who practices what he preaches. This relaxed, friendly Pastor says, “I allow God to do the speaking for me. It is not me, it is him.” The open house is at the Upper Rogue Community Center at 22465 Highway 62 (behind city hall) from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The public is invited. For more information call Chasteen at 441-3683.
