The Butte Falls Speech and Debate Team, coached by Marcia Stewart-Warren, began their competitive season on Oct. 10 at The South Coast Tournament held at Marshfield High School in Coos Bay. The tournament attracted a cross-section of outstanding students from around the state. Three members of the Butte Falls team received awards at the meet. Freshman Kelsi Hanson placed third in Novice Serious Interpretation. Freshman Brittney Gorman placed second in Novice Humorous Interpretation and junior Quinby Barrows won first place in Senior Humorous Interpretation. Team members Scarlett Weaver and David Dunham attended a Southern Oregon Student Congress competition at North Medford High School on Oct. 13. Senior David Dunham received Fifth Place, in a field of over 35 competitors. The next Southern Oregon Student Congress will be Nov.12 at Butte Falls High School.
On Oct. 23-24, the team attended one of the largest tournaments of the season at Willamette University in Salem. Over 300 students participated, representing high schools from across the state of Oregon and from California and Washington. Four members of the Butte Falls speech team received awards at the meet. Freshman Skyla Cozad was a finalist in Junior Prose Reading. Quinby Barrows was a finalist in Senior Humorous Interpretation and junior Kyle Kinyon was a finalist in Senior Radio Commentary. Barrows and David Dunham placed third in Senior Public Forum Debate.
This year the Butte Falls team has a number of freshman competitors who are off to an outstanding start. Coach Stewart-Warren believes many of them will also be finalists before the end of the year.
