Lincoln Briery, 95, of White City, died Dec. 23, 2009 at his home.
Born May 1, 1914 in Sabine Parish, Louisiana to John Henry Briery and Clara Iva (Waddle) Briery, he was the seventh of 12 children, and the only of his siblings to be born outside the state of Kansas. The family returned to Western Kansas shortly after his birth, and he spent most of his childhood living in Kansas or Eastern Colorado.
During the depression, he began a plumbing apprenticeship in Denver which continued into a stint in the CCCs at Mesa Verde. He remained a plumber his entire life and was a 54 year member of Local 114.
On Oct. 10, 1937, he married Frances Loleta Appling in Riverbank, California where they eventually settled. There, he became a member of the local schoolboard, and was active in many of the building programs which still serve that district today. He was a charter member of the Riverbank Lions Club, and held nearly every office in that club including President.
As their three sons began leaving home to start families of their own, Link and Lita did some moving, following plumbing work and trying out new places. They lived in Twain Harte, Ca.; Santa Maria, Ca; Grover City, Ca. and Oceano, Ca before finally retiring in White City, Or. in 1977.
His wife, Lita, passed in 2003 after 65 years of marriage. Link was also preceded in death by five brothers, five sisters and a foster son, Lee Quigley, who was always an important member of the family.
He is survived by three sons: Gary (Sharron) Briery of Oakdale, Ca., Gig (Sammie) Briery of Camden, Ar, Ron (Sandy) Briery of Eagle Point, Or., his one remaining sibling, Nellie Anderson of Hillsdale, Mi. and a whole bunch of nieces, nephews, grandkids and great-grandkids.
There will be a celebration of his long, eventful life on Jan. 9, 2010 at 1 p.m. at 24617 Rocky Point Rd. in Rocky Point (about 9 miles past Lake of the Woods on Hwy 140). Bring your favorite story, or share a joke that Dad told you. In lieu of flowers, have a shot of Jim Beam or Jack Daniels sometime, or kiss a retired plumber.
