District 9 seeks new business manager

The District 9 school board met in executive session Monday, Mar. 15 to consider the dismissal or discipline or to hear complaints on charges brought against an employee who did not request a public hearing.

Following the executive session, the board voted to approve the dismissal of the business manager, Randy Struckmeier,  based on failure to meet district expectations for the budget cycle and a failure to maintain adequate relations with the staff.

Board member Jim Mannenbach expressed concern about the process. Mannenbach and Mark Bateman voted no. However, they voted yes on the four housekeeping resolutions which removed Struckmeier’s name and signature on  official school financial business.

Supt. Cynda Rickert said former interim business manager Dan Zaklan will once again perform the duties of business manager on a part-time, interim basis.

Struckmeier will remain on the payroll through June 30 and is to be available to provide information if needed.

Struckmeier was selected as business manager and officially became business manager July 1, 2009. He spent six weeks working with Zaklan prior to the official placement. Struckmeier was one of several applicants for the position. Struckmeier spent nearly three decades in financial planning and management; 20 of those years were as a financial director for Harry & David. Prior to that he was with Dole for seven years.

The process for hiring a permanent business manager was not discussed at last week’s meeting.
