It apparently was at that point that a fight was reported and a gunshot was heard. Officers arrived on the scene within three minutes and found the salesman, Robert Joe Johnson, age 32, wounded and on the ground at the parking lot. At the same time, a subject fled the scene in a gray-colored Mustang. The first police officer stayed with the victim who had been shot in the abdomen while other officers engaged in pursuit of the fleeing vehicle.
The chase took them north on Crater Lake Avenue and to Highway 62 at a high rate of speed. The chase continued as the suspect turned on to Highway 140. He turned on to Obenchain Road where he crashed. He was arrested without incident and take into custody.
The suspect is Clayton Emil Huff, 49, of Eagle Point. The victim, who underwent surgery and is recovering is Robert Joe Johnson, 32, of Medford.
On Tuesday, Mar. 2, Medford PD determined there was no connection brtween the suspect (Huff) and the victim (Johnson) or any drug transaction.
Damage to the Mustang indicates it may have been involved in a collision with another vehicle while the suspect was attempting to elude police.
Additionally, Medford Police are requesting assistance from the public in locating the suspect’s personal vehicle, which is described as a black 1991 Chevy pick up with oversized tires and Oregon license 015 BZH.
