School District 9 announced last week that they have hired Paul Cataldo to fill the position of principal at White Mountain Middle School. This comes as the result of the retirement of Dan Johnson at the end of the current school year. Cataldo will join District 9 in August.
Cataldo, spent 10 years as teacher and administrator in District 9. He has 30 years of experience in education. His formal education included a B.S. in Accounting from the New York Institute of Technology; M.A. in Education from Southern Oregon University and Administrative Certification from the University of Oregon.
His is currently principal of Hedrick Middle School in Medford, where he has been employed for seven years. His previous experience includes: Assistant Principal for Eagle Point High School, South Medford High School and McLoughlin Middle School in Medford. Prior to his administrative career he was a teacher for both Hood River Junior High and Eagle Point High School.
White Mountain Middle School serves 400 students, 20 teachers and 13 support staff. Cataldo’s depth of experience and educational background made him the top choice as principal for White Mountain Middle School, said the interview team, which was unanimous in their support of recommending Cataldo to the superintendent for hiring.
The position was posted on Feb. 12, and the process for hiring included multiple steps. White Mountain Middle School staff nominated staff to serve voluntarily on the hiring committee. Staff that were nominated to serve on the committee included: teachers, a classified representative and a parent representative. Other staff volunteering to serve on the interview committee represented the district and all grade levels.
After the posting period expired, numerous applications were reviewed and screened by the interview committee. A total of seven applicants were selected by the committee to interview. After the interviews and the reference checks were complete, the committee chose to visit Cataldo’s current campus. For approximately three hours various members of the committee met with him, toured the campus and met with staff members from the site.
Committee members said the process was very comprehensive, thorough and very rewarding. They said they believe they have selected an outstanding candidate to provide the very best support and educational leadership for White Mountain Middle School.
