Saturday, June 12 is the annual Rogue River Guides salmon derby. This year anyone can participate and the cost is only $20 per person. Called the first Rogue River Salmon Derby, it replaces the derby where you had to hire a guide and the number of participants was limited.
The new derby allows salmon fishing anywhere on the Rogue above Graves Creek, which is almost 30 miles below Grants Pass and the start of the Wild and Scenic part of the Rogue River. There will be over $1,000 in prizes and for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place biggest salmon.
Tickets must be purchased by June 11. They are available at many locations. Some of those include Blackbird, Pat’s Hand Tied Flies, Rogue Rods, Touvelle Tavern, Sportsman’s Warehouse, Willie’s Boats, Fish Rite Boats, Highway Products, Fishing Hole, and several other locations.
An extra bonus this year, June 12 is free fishing day, which means no license or salmon tag is needed for that day, according to Gene Gross, Rogue River Guides president. If you catch a fish, bring it to Touvelle Tavern for the weighin-gilled and gutted before 3 p.m.
