The deadline has passed to apply for a seat on the city councils for Eagle Point, Shady Cove and Butte Falls.
Following is a list of candidates and a brief item about each.
Eagle Point will have a decision when it comes to the position of mayor. Leon Sherman can no longer serve as mayor, because of term limits. The mayor can serve four 2-year terms. Those running for mayor in Eagle Point are Bob Russell and Rick Tree.
Russell, with his wife Debbie, owns Butte Creek Mill and the antique store next to it. He currently serves on the Eagle Point Economic Development Committee and is vice-president of the Eagle Point Chamber of Commerce.
Tree works for Qwest. He is a member of the city council and is completing a four-year term . He is the council representative to Regional Problem Solving meetings. There are three vacancies on the city council and four people will seek the seats with the three securing the most votes will be seated.
Vacant seats are those of Rick Tree, Terry Christianson (whose term expires) and Wyn Lewis, who is not seeking re-election.
Running for the positions are: Jonathan Bilden, Ruth Jenks, Kathy Sell and Leon Sherman.
Bilden previously served on the District 9 Board of Directors and is currently a member of the Eagle Point Economic Development Committee and is president-elect of the Eagle Point/Upper Rogue Chamber of Commerce. He manages High Point Management. He is a graduate of Eagle Point High School.
Jenks is past president of the Eagle Point Golf Community Homeowner’s Association and has participated in the SMART reading program as well as Master Gardeners. She has lived in Eagle Point for 8or 9 years, having retired from a corporate position in California.
Sell owns Valley Feed & Pet Supply with her husband, Randy. She does seasonal contract administration for Forest Capital Partners, LLC; and in the summer is part of the management team for Crater Lake Council Cub Scout Camp program; and, she is production manager for the Upper Rogue Independent. She is a member of the Economic Development Committee and is on the Board of Directors of the Eagle Point/Upper Rogue Chamber of Commerce.
Sherman not only completed two terms as mayor, he has been for many years extremely involved in the Eagle Point Community Association and announces the parade and fireworks on July 4th as well. Prior to being mayor, Sherman was Eagle Point Chief of Police for a number of years.
In Shady Cove Mayor Ron Holthusen. Councilor Bill Kyle and Gary Hughes are each running for re-election. There are no other candidates.
