Merrill N. “Dave” Bliss, 91, of Eagle Point, died Sept. 7, 2010, at Eagle Cove Assisted Living where he had resided since 2001.
He was born Dec. 13, 1918, in Rogue River, Ore.
Mr. Bliss was an early long time logger in the Rogue Valley. Prior to joining the Army to serve in WWII, he would buy, sell and trade a string of horses from Northern California to Roseburg. He served in the Army in the South Pacific and was awarded the American Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal. He was a member of the Eagle Point VFW Post 6184.
Mr. Bliss and his wife, Dolores, ranched, logged, raised cattle, sheep and horses for many years. He married Dolores Kathryn Bergquist on July 5, 1946. They were married 58 years before she passed in 2003.
He is survived by two step-daughters, Lois Alexander, of Salem, and Jean Bergquist, of Grangeville, Idaho; and a step-son, Ronald Bergquist, of Ashland;a son, David Bliss, of Medford; and daughters, Daphne Henson, of Medford and Drusilla Swopes, of Riggins, Idaho, as well as many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Daniel, in 1975, and a step-daughter, Nonette in2003.
A memorial service will be held at the Eagle Point National ??Cemetery Internment Shelter on Sept. 15, at 11 a.m. Richard Everson, of White City, will officiate.
