Jackson County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the 3200 block of Antelope Road in White City just before 12:30 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 2, for a report of a gunshot wound.
Jackson County Fire District #3 and Mercy Flights responded to render medical aid. The victim was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. Detectives from the Jackson County Major Assault and Death Investigation Unit responded and assumed the investigation.
The victim was identified as 22-year-old Margarito Benito Aguilar of White City.
Detectives identified the suspect as 23-year-old Andres Garcia Palomino, also of White City. Around 5 p.m., the sheriff’s SWAT team, along with assistance from the Medford SWAT team, conducted a search at a location in the 3200 block of White City. Upon entry to that location it was determined Garcia-Palomino was not there.
On Sunday, Oct. 3 at 2 a.m., Andres Garcia-Palomino was located in Medford, when his family attempted to turn him in to Medford Police patrol. He was interviewed and said the firearm discharged accidently as he was handing it over to the victim. Garcia-Palomino said he was scared and ran to his parent’s house and then to another location where he spent the remainder of the day.
Detective were able to recover the gun and the magazine from a trash can in the Ashland area.
Garcia-Palomino was lodged in Jackson County Jail on charges of manslaughter II and felon in possession of a firearm.
