Twenty years of municipal experience led Danise Brakeman to Shady Cove as the new City Administrator. Brakeman officially took over the reins on November 15.
Before accepting the Shady Cove position, Brakeman was employed for 20 years by the City of Bonanza, Oregon, population 475. In Bonanza, Brakeman filled every position but treasurer, she said. She was elected city recorder in November 1990 but was also planning administrator/director, public works administrator, budget secretary, utility clerk, grant writer and event planner. In 2006, the Bonanza city charter was modified and at that time Brakeman’s position became an appointment by the city council rather than an elected position.
The most serious issue Brakeman faced in Bonanza was a water issue when the city’s water became contaminated, she said. Her experience in this department should stand her in good stead. Shady Cove City Council is looking for means to bring water to the city and Brakeman is familiar with some agencies dealing with those types of issues.
About her new position, Brakeman said, “Everything is going well. Dale (Shaddox, former interim city administrator) is transitioning me slowly. I am reading and learning a lot.” Brakeman lives in Eagle Point with her husband, Randy, and three children, ages 7, 5 and 3.
