On Tuesday, January 11, 2011 just after 10:10 PM, a Jackson County Sheriff’s deputy initiated a traffic stop along Avenue A, in White City. The vehicle quickly fled south on Highway 62 towards Medford. The suspect vehicle, a white Chevy Cavalier, sped through many red lights. The pursuit continued through parts of Medford. Units from both Oregon State Police and Medford Police Department assisted in the pursuit. At 10:27 PM, the pursuit was terminated for safety purposes.
The suspect vehicle was last seen driving down Poplar Avenue. Moments later the vehicle was spotted at Morrow Road and Progress Drive. It had jumped a curve and bent its front left wheel, making the vehicle inoperable. The suspects were seen running from the vehicle. K-9 units were called in to help search the area for the suspects.
Just after 10:35 PM, one of the suspects was caught, by a Medford Police Officer, near Wilson Elementary. The driver, Bernie G. Helms II, 05-19-90, of Phoenix, was arrested on numerous charges, and is being lodged at the Jackson County Jail. The passenger of the vehicle was not located.
The pursuit is still under investigation and further charges are pending.
