Annual Duck Race in Shady Cove

By Scarlett Miles

Looking for some family fun on the bank of the Rogue River? The Upper Rogue Community Center Duck race will be held on Sunday Aug. 28 from noon to 4pm at the Jackson County Regional Park in Shady Cove.  The proceeds from this event will all benefit the Upper Rogue Van service for elderly and disabled people.

Here’s how it works; For $5.00, you will be “adopting” a duck. For every duck you “adopt”, you will be given a brochure with your duck’s number on it. Each duck has a number on the bottom. Your duck(s) will be placed into a basket with other “adopted” ducks. When we have enough ducks in the basket, we will race them in the river. If your duck crosses the finish line first, you will win a prize. We may award second, third, fourth, and maybe even fifth place wins as prizes allow.

There will be about 9 races; 5 heats , 2 children’s free races. For the Grand Finale race, first place ducks in each heat race for a grand prize.  Last place ducks in each heat race in the Lame Duck Race- the duck that places last in this one wins a prize.

There are lots of prizes including a night at Seven feathers, hotel stays, raft trips, store and restaurant gift certificates, haircuts, a massage, dental, and veterinarian visit.

There will be food, music, games for the kids and a fun day by the Rogue.
Chances to win (Duck Adoption papers) will be sold at the Duck Race event and at the Upper Rogue Community Center through Fri. Aug. 26 and at the Duck Race on Sun. Aug. 28. For more information call URCC at 541-878-2702. Hope to see you there!
