Segment of Bear Camp Road Temporarily Closed 9/26 – 10/7; Detour on Burnt Ridge Road
Between Sept. 26, and Oct. 7, a 7.5 mile segment of the Bear Camp Road (Forest Service Road # 23) will be temporarily closed to vehicular traffic to allow replacement of a 5 foot diameter culvert. A detour on Forest Service Road # 2308 (Burnt Ridge Road) will be established with signs marking the detour route. Travel on the alternate route is estimated to take an additional 5 minutes.
Gates will be closed on the Bear Camp Road at mile posts 36.5 and 29.0 for public safety reasons associated with heavy equipment operations and limited turnaround locations. The gate on the west side of the project is located approximately 0.5 miles from the junction of the Agness Road (Forest Service Road #33) and the Bear Camp Road, near the community of Agness. The gate on the east side of the project is located approximately 2.7 miles west of the Shasta Costa overlook. Barricades will be in place at both ends of the restricted area to notify motorists in advance of the gate closure and direct traffic to the detour route.
Once the culvert is installed and the Bear Camp Road is reopened, brief traffic delays up to 15 minutes are expected until the project is complete on October 25, 2011.
The Bear Camp Road provides the shortest route between Grants Pass and Gold Beach, over the rugged Siskiyou Mountains. The narrow mountain road is not maintained for winter travel from Nov. 5 through May 31. U.S. Route 199 and U.S. Highway 101 are recommended for trailers, motor homes, and oversized vehicles year around and for all vehicular travel during winter months.
