Santa needs many helpers, now

Santa’s helper has come to the rescue. Thanks to Ed Dahack, there will once again be a Santa’s Shop. He is donating use of the building near the Covered Bridge that previously housed Lenz Chiropractic. The Chamber of Commerce will pay for water and power.  Last year’s first Santa’s Shop was so successful we didn’t have enough room in the Judge Stewart House.

The shop will be operational from Dec. 10-21.

But in order to open there is a lot of work to be done. We are very, very much in need of volunteers this year. First off, we need people to clean and to move items that are still stored at the Stewart House and elsewhere. This could be an opportunity for students needing community service hours through high school or through a 4-H program. But, we are not discounting the need for adult help. Before we can move items, the cleaning must be done.  We also need  some cleaning supplies.

While the cleaning is underway, donations can now begin to arrive at the Upper Rogue Independent office. For those who may have forgotten or who are new to the area, the Santa Shop is a place for those who have little in the way of funds for Christmas. Those who shop make a donation if they can, and many do. But if they cannot donate, they can still shop. Last year we served about 500 families thanks to an extremely caring, generous community and several who made significant cash donations to keep us shopping.

This year, Walmart has given us a check for $1,000 to begin shopping. But that shopping will wait while we see what items are donated. Please be sure things are clean, in good condition. Last year we received just about everything imaginable, from children’s jewelry to drills for dad, clothing, small appliances, games, bikes, skateboards. Just take a look around your home and chances are you will find many items that others would greatly appreciate. Or perhaps you can watch for some of the super sales and purchase items.

Our other great need is volunteers to set up the shop before it opens and to help box up leftovers when it closes, as well as those to work the store. Hours last year were from 10-4 p.m. Mon-Sat. We need at least two people to work a minimum of two hour shifts. Please call the Independent at 541-826-7700 to get the hours and days you prefer to be a Santa helper.
