A frantic call to 9-1-1 at 12:20 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, by Michelle McCullough said she smoke coming from the garage as she was returning home. She said her husband was disabled in the nearby master bedroom, unable to get out of the house on his own.
Fire District 4 and Fire District 3 responded with two engines and two water tenders each to the home in the 300 block of Country Court, in Shady Cove. Fire District 4 had just completed volunteer training and had a number of the volunteers available, said District 4 Fire Chief Bob Miller.
Jackson County Sheriff’s Department also responded because there was a person trapped.
Firefighters found Anthony McCullouch deceased.
District 3 assisted on the roof and in the attic, said District 3 spokesperson Don Hickman.
Wednesday is an early release day for District 9 schools. Miller said a call was made to the school where two children attended and a relative picked them up so they would not arrive home unattended to witness the fire and loss of their father.
Deputy Fire Marshals Michelle Stevens and Charlie Chase were still investigating the cause of the fire as of late last Thursday. Hickman and Miller said it appears the fire started in the bedroom, but that had not been confirmed.
