Wayne T. Bernhardt, 44, died Dec. 18, 2011, at Camp Selerno Airfield in Afghanistan.
He was born May 26, 1967, in Bandon, Ore., to Delores Bernhardt and Tom Leonard. Wayne lived in Eagle Point from 1969 until he graduated from high school in 1985.
After graduation, he joined the Navy and served until 1994. While serving in the Navy, Wayne spent four years working with dogs for security sweeps and military patrol. During that time he earned many awards for dog handling and service to his country.
He married Kim Willits in 1987. They had two children, Marquelle and Benjamin, who were the pride and love of his life. In 2002, Wayne married Dana Goss, of Colorado, who survives. At the time of his death he was working as a civilian contract worker in security and dog handling at Camp Salerno Airfield in Afghanistan.
Wayne was preceded in death by his mom, Delores, grandparents and several aunts and uncles. He is survived by his wife, Dana; daughter, Marquelle Lynn (Jared) Hartman and son, Benjamin Thomas Bernhardt, both of Beaverton; brother, Ron (Carmen) Bernhardt, of Henderson, Nev.; sisters, Diana (Willie) Debrick, of Eagle Point and Nancie Jenkins, of Eugene, Ore.; five nieces, one nephew and several great nieces and nephews. Wayne left all of us too soon but is at peace with Mom and will be greatly missed.
A memorial service was held Jan. 14, 2012 at Conger-Morris, Central Point. Sgt. Mark Dalton officiated.
