Jim was born in Condon, Oregon on October 23, 1951 and grew up in both Oregon and California. His family moved to Santa Rosa, California in 1967 where he graduated from high school while participating in wrestling and track and field. In 1971 Jim joined the United States Navy and was stationed overseas in Vietnam and the Philippines. After his stint in the Navy Jim, who was always good with his hands, moved to the Rogue Valley and became a carpenter, a trade he worked at for over 40 years.
Jim’s Christian faith was important to him and he not only talked the talk, he walked the walk. Jim was an active member of Trail Christian Fellowship, served on the TCF Mission Board, volunteered countless hours to Good News Club, the Medford Men’s Gospel Mission, played music for children’s worship service and helped with children’s ministries, and went on several mission trips to Tecate, Mexico where he worked on an orphanage and helped build homes for Baja Ministries. Jim was the kind of man who lived out his biblical principles; if he had two shirts and you had none, you could count on the fact that he’d give you one.
Jim’s passions included playing the guitar with Sam’s Valley Circle of Friends/Foggy Bottom Boys, singing for friends and family, ministering to the men at the Medford Gospel Mission, becoming a master gardener, reciting cowboy poetry, and being an avid conversationalist. Like many men of solid character, it can be said that Jim never met a stranger.
J im is survived by his wife Sherrie, his son Joel (Krystal), his two grandchildren Jocelyn and Lucas, his prodigal son Daniel C. R. Hanson , his parents Roy and Geri Dunn, his brothers Lee (Louise), Steve (Debbie), and Ron Dunn, and his sisters JoAnn Baracosa (Frank) and Rebecca Bolling (Peter) and many nieces and nephews.
There was a celebration of Jim’s life on May 26 at the Trail Christian Fellowship Fireside Room. In honor of Jim his family requests that donations be made in his memory to three organizations he loved and gave his time and talents to: the Medford Gospel Mission, Good News Club, or to Trail Christian Fellowship (with Baja Mission in the memo).
