The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and the Major Assault and Death Investigation Unit (MADIU) are currently investigating an in-custody death involving the Eagle Point Police Department.
On Tuesday, June 12, 2012 at 6:15 pm, the Eagle Point Police Department responded to the 100 block of Little Butte Drive in Eagle Point for a medical call. When officers arrived they witnessed Scott Chappell, 01/06/68 of Eagle Point, behaving very erratically. Family members at the location were concerned for his safety and asked the officers to take him to the hospital. The officers and medics on scene agreed Chappell’s behavior was a danger to himself and others.
When officers attempted to escort him to a vehicle, his behavior became increasingly erratic. There was a small struggle and an electronic restraint device was used, although it did not affect Chappell in any way. He was eventually detained and placed in an ambulance. While medical responders were transporting Chappell to an area hospital he stopped breathing. He was pronounced dead in the emergency department at Rogue Valley Medical Center.
An autopsy will be performed and toxicology reports will be sent out for testing.
The case remains under investigation.
