Jackson County libraries make eBook borrowing available

Love library books, but hate those overdue book fees? Love books and really love eBooks and are looking for a free way to read that latest novel on your PC, laptop, Kindle, Nook, iPhone or iPad? Then rejoice that you live in Oregon and head to the Jackson County Library website today: http://www.jcls.org/.

In a presentation on eBooks given at the Shady Cove Library on August 14, Eric Molinsky of JCLS advised libraries throughout the US (and world) are beginning to make eBook borrowing available. In most states individual libraries, or a few libraries, get together to create this option. Oregon has opted to go statewide with eBooks; the upside – lots more books to choose from; the downside if you really want the latest best seller you may be in line behind lots of folks from all over the state to borrow it. However local libraries can (and do) purchase extra eBooks on hot ticket items.

Now we have the “what” – here’s the “how” (the important part). First you do need a Jackson County Library card – so get one! Next, go to the Jackson Library home page and click on the “Get Help” half of the “Library to Go” button on the mid-right side of the page. From there you can access help documents that will guide you through every step of the process, from searching for the book you want to downloading it to your “device of choice”. iPad users will need to download the Overdrive Media Console app, Kindle users will not – the “Get Help” documents will walk you through step by step for every device possible from PCs to Nooks and all devices in between.

You can check books out for 7, 14 or 21 days and you can not keep them beyond that date. No driving to drop off your books or those dreaded late fees. The books will just vanish from your device! Too easy! Jackson County currently has 16,494 titles to choose from – you may check out 6 at a time.

But wait, there’s more! You can also check out audio books (MP3 or Windows), videos and the library web site has a link to another nifty site where you can download and keep a variety of Public Domain books (over 34,000 more titles to choose from).

If you have questions or need additional help email JCLS support at: odsupport@jcls.org – all emails are answered within 72 hours! Now stop reading and go read!
