Friday night’s street legal races

Gearing up for their much anticipated Jet Fire Thunder event next weekend, Champion Raceway hosted another night of street legal bracket racing on Friday, Sept. 14th. Approximately 70 cars showed up to run the 1/4 mile in High School, Motorcycle, Sport Compact, Street DOT, and Hot Rod classes.

Brittni Bloomberg won the High School class, running a time of 15.124 seconds and hitting 93.10 MPH in her mother’s 2013 Mustang. Bloomberg is a senior at Cascade Christian High School.

Runner up in the High School class was Meghan Callahan, who crossed the line in 12.566 seconds after reaching 107.44 MPH in her ’74 Nova.

Winner of the Motorcycle class was Derek Wolf on his ’07 Yamaha. Wolf ran a 10.327 second time and reached 124.69 MPH. Roger Davis III was the Motorcycle runner up, pushing to 136.19 MPH on his ’06 Honda for a time of 11.477 seconds.

Greg Provost, a newcomer to the track, won the Sport Compact class with his ’05 Mini Cooper. Provost hit 86.14 MPH and ran a time of 16.901 seconds in the finals. Larry Chapman took the runner up award in his ’89 Cavalier, reaching 84.75 MPH for a 15.338 second time.

The Street DOT class was taken by Kevin Barden, who went 113.78 MPH in his ’65 Mustang to finish the 1/4 in 12.168 seconds.

Jon Ruff lined up against Anthony Guida in the finals of the Hot Rod class. Ruff won the class, running a 10.182 second time at 132.66 MPH in his ’82 Camaro. Guida was the runner up, finishing in 13.428 seconds at 100.06 MPH in his ’72 Chevelle.

All race fans in the area owe it to themselves to visit Champion Raceway on Saturday, Sept. 22nd, for a night of fire-breathing jet dragsters. Featured racers are The Incinerator, The Black Rat, and Ed “the Outlaw” Jones in his wheel standing firetruck which runs the whole length of the strip on its back wheels! Blown alcohol dragsters and nostalgia cars will also take the track, while the top bracket racers in the valley compete for a $1,600 grand prize.

There will be a 50/50 raffle to benefit the Southern Oregon Meth Project and the Youth Education Success program, with other prizes also to be given away.

General admission is $20.00, kids under twelve are $5.00, and kids under five get in free. Stop by the Upper Rogue Independent office to pickup a coupon for $5 of the ticket price.
