Sunday afternoon traffic halted and backed up for miles at 1:30 p.m. September 30 where Hwy 234 meets Sams Creek Road. According to Sr. State Trooper, Bill Matson, motorist Gayle Reed driving a 2005 Lexus SUV, turned left in the path of a west bound Honda motorcycle. The Honda, operated by Rickey Kirkman then struck the SUV’s side door, injuring Reed’s passenger, Crystal Howell.
Witnesses reported seeing a helicopter overhead, and nothing but tiny pieces of the motorcycle strewn about the highway. Star Towing removed the damaged vehicle.
Matson reported that Kirkman was airlifted to Rogue Regional Medical Center, and Howell was transported by ground ambulance to the same hospital. Reed received a citation for making a dangerous left turn. No information regarding victims’ current medical condition was available at press time.
