Antonius ‘Tom’ Zomerdyk
Age 88, of Roseburg, Oregon passed away peacefully on February 14, 2013 at his home surrounded by family. Tom was born September 10, 1924 in Den Helder, Holland. He joined the Merchant Marines at the age of 16 and eventually immigrated to the United States at the age of 21. It was then that he met the love of his life, Maxine West in Garberville, California. They were married on November 30, 1953 in Bakersfield, California. Tom and Maxine moved to Shady Cove, Oregon in 1958 where they lived and raised their four children in “The Cove”. In 2001 Tom and Maxine moved to Roseburg, Oregon. Tom was an amazing husband, father, grandfather and uncle. Tom loved traveling the world and fishing as a young man. In his later years he enjoyed playing cards, country drives, spending time with his dogs, friends and most of all his family.
Tom is survived by his wife, of almost 60 years, Maxine Zomerdyk; his sister, Lydia Zomerdijk of Holland; his children: Patricia Zimmerlee of White City, Oregon; Lydia Ouellette (Steve) of Roseburg, Oregon; Timothy Zomerdyk (Jenny) of Shady Cove, Oregon. Tom is also survived by 21 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents; his sister Meta DeVries; brother Will Zomerdijk; son Anthony Zomerdyk; granddaughters Rachel and Stephanie Zomerdyk, and great-grandson Joshua Lauritzen.
Tom lived a full life, and he will be greatly missed… “WE LOVE YOU ALL THE WAY TO WHERE THE BALLOONS GO”
A private family memorial was held on Saturday, February 16, his ashes will be scattered among those of his son Anthony and brother-in-law Jim West at the family reunion in Shady Cove, Oregon, this July.
