A handful of die-hard drag drivers showed up to Champion Raceway for the eleventh seasonal street legal races on the evening of Friday July 12, following the wildly popular Midnight Mayhem and Night of Fire events. At a driver’s meeting before the time trials, track officials discussed possible ways to attract more racers from the Klamath area.
Track manager, Kirk Hobson, has mentioned several times his desire to see more high school drivers running their cars at Champion. The Friday Night races are the perfect opportunity, and someone needs to give Central Point’s Brittni Bloomberg a little competition. As the sole contender, Bloomberg won the High School class with a 15.631 E.T. at 88.60 MPH on a .178 reaction time in her ’05 VW Jetta.
Jerry Stinson won the Motorcycle class, taking his ’05 Hayabusa for a 9.976 sec pass at 120.97 MPH with a .145 reaction time. Runner up in the motorcycles was Derek Wolf, who ran his ’07 Yamaha at 116.35 MPH for an 11.635 E.T. on a .178 reaction time.
First place in the Sports Compact class went to Larry Chapman and his ’89 Cavalier. Chapman ran a 14.804 E.T. at 90.98 MPH on a .215 reaction time in the finals. Stevin Emigh took the Sports Compact runner up spot in his ’01 Integra, with a pass of 15.673 sec at 88.03 MPH on a .087 reaction time.
Jim Alcorn won the Street DOT class in his ’67 LeMans with the beautiful forest green paint job. Alcorn ran an 11.741 E.T. at 110.42 MPH on a .039 reaction time. Street DOT runner up went to Tom Langdon and his ’13 Mustang, with a final pass of 14.033 sec at 99.46 MPH on a .089 reaction time.
Hot Rod class winner was Anthony Guida in his ’72 Chevelle, with a 12.853 sec pass at 100.04 MPH on a .034 reaction time in the finals. Jerry Cochrane took the runner up spot in the hot rods, pedaling down the 1/4 mile at 105.99 MPH for a 13.025 E.T. on a .047 reaction time.
Along with the regular Street Legal and ET Races on Friday and Saturday nights, Champion Raceway has plenty of other exciting events planned for the rest of the season. The Killer Bees Racing team is coming to town for the Slant 6/Land of the Leader event on the weekend of July 27th and 28th.
A night of motorcycle racing, sponsored by D&S Harley Davidson and the Southern Oregon Humane Society, is on the schedule for Saturday, Aug. 3. There will also be two double-points ET Races on the weekend of Aug. 10th and 11th. For ticket and entry information, go to championraceway.com or contact 541-290-DRAG (3724).
