Crater High School Agriculture Teacher Selected for Educator Award

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Kristen Kostman, agricultural educator at Crater High School in Central Point, Ore., is one of only six individuals nationwide who received the National Association of Agricultural Educators Teacher Mentor Award, given at the NAAE annual convention in Nashville, Tenn. on December 7.

NAAE recognizes teachers who have mentored others in the profession of agricultural education through the Teacher Mentor award.

Kostman has taught agricultural education for 14 years and is always willing to share resources with her fellow teachers, including lesson plans, trip itineraries, lab set up tips, and classroom management strategies. She also is very willing to share what she declares her most important tool, her mistakes. She calls the resources teachers share with one another their toolbox, and she believes that the more well-stocked a teacher’s toolbox, the more prepared they will be for any situation.

Kostman mentors teachers over the phone, via e-mail and in person, getting to know each one and their needs. Together they develop the foundation they need to become successful agriscience teachers and FFA advisors. She encourages educators to go beyond their comfort zones, with her support.

“Mrs. Kostman pushes fellow teachers to grow as instructors and mentors for not only our students but our peers,” said Nicole Bambino, Days Creek FFA Advisor. “[Her] interactions provide Oregon Agriculture Instructors with a variety of opportunities and resources within the industry, thus creating more meaningful experiences for students both in and out of the classroom.”
