After serving Eagle Point for seven years, Police Chief Vern Thompson retired. On December 18, 2017, City Administrator Henry Lawrence appointed Sergeant Darin May to fill the position of Interim Police Chief. Sergeant May is the longest serving staff member, having been with the Police Department since 1998. (Finance Director Melissa Owens is a close runner-up.) “I am confident that we are in good hands with Chief May leading the department,” says Lawrence, who will take the time needed to find the right person to fill the position. The search could take up to six months. “He’s a sergeant, and sergeants get things done,” Lawrence continued. He concluded by thanking Chief May for stepping up and agreeing to fill the interim position. City Recorder Cindy Hughes swore in Chief May, while members of his department looked on.
